MBE Awarded to Hammie Tappenden

On Saturday 1st September 2018, the Lord-Lieutenant, on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, presented Hammie Tappenden with the MBE.  Hammie (Elizabeth) Tappenden, owner of Solent-based into Biz Ltd, was named in the New Year’s Honours List at the end of 2017.

For the past 25 years, Hammie has devoted her time to supporting more than 6,000 people wishing to start up their own business and has helped set up more than 800 businesses in the last ten years.

Dieppe Raid Commemoration

On Sunday 19th August 2018, the Lord-Lieutenant and Lady White joined local dignitaries at Shanklin Chine to a Service of Remembrance to commemorate the Dieppe Raid on 19th August 1942.

The 40 Royal Marine Commando took part in the first major amphibious raid on the French coast at Dieppe.  The day did not go well. There were many casualties and some 40 men swam out to sea to be rescued.  The Second-in-Command, Major Houghton and others, were unable to leave the beach and continued to fight until all ammunition was expended and they were taken prisoner.

Before the raid on Dieppe, Shanklin Chine was used by 40 Commando Royal Marines for daily training.  The Headquarters was established at Upper Chine School and the Commando was billeted in Shanklin, Sandown and Ventnor.

Isle of Wight Pride 2018

On Saturday 21 July 2018, Isle of Wight Dignitaries joined Deputy Lieutenant, Mrs Anne Longford DL in attending the UK Pride event which was  held in Ryde.

The event started with the Royal Navy parachute display team, dropping in to the Pride arena on the beach as the main procession left Ryde School.

Ability Dogs 4 Young People

HM Lord-Lieutenant, Major General Sir Martin White presented Ability Dogs 4 Young People with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service on Wednesday 11th July 2018.

Ability Dogs 4 Young People is one of four charities on the Island to be awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service this year.

Centenary Anniversary Romanov Commemoration

On Saturday 7th July, the Lord-Lieutenant attended the unveiling of a monument, marking the 100th anniversary of the deaths of the Russian royal family.  The seven-and-a-half-tonne granite monument was unveiled in Jubilee Park, East Cowes, close to Osborne House which the Romanov family visited in the years before World War One

Descendants of the Romanovs as well as Russian Orthodox bishops and a choir from Minsk, Belarus, attended the unveiling which was part of a weekend of commemorative events on the Island.
