RBL Isle of Wight County Poppy Appeal 2018

On Saturday 27th October 2018, a parade and drumhead service took place in Newport to mark the start of the poppy appeal on the Isle of Wight.  Addresses were given by Ian Ward, President RBL IOW and HM Lord-Lieutenant.

Following the Service the salute was taken by HM Lord-Lieutenant Major General Sir Martin White.

Legal Service Procession 2018

On Monday 15th October 2018, the Lord-Lieutenant attended the annual Legal Service at the Minster Church, Newport.
This traditional Service is held on the Isle of Wight each year and provides an opportunity to give thanks for the Queen’s Peace and our Heritage, in the presence of Her Majesty’s Judiciary.

Northwood House Charitable Trust

HM Lord-Lieutenant, Major General Sir Martin White presented Northwood House Charitable Trust with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service on Friday 5th October 2018.

Northwood House Charitable Trust is one of four charities on the Island to be awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service this year.

Lord-Lieutenant’s Annual Award Ceremony

The annual Lord-Lieutenant’s Award ceremony took place on Wednesday 3rd October 2018 at the Royal Yacht Squadron.

Three British Empire Medals (BEM) were presented to:
Mr Scott Watkin BEM for services to People with Learning Disabilities
Mr Reginald Barry BEM for services to the Community
Mrs Ann Pembroke BEM For services to the Cultural History of the City of London.

HM Lord-Lieutenant also presented awards to Island residents, in recognition of their services to the community.

Centenary Memorial Stone Unveiled

On Thursday 27th September 2018, the Isle of Wight’s Lord-Lieutenant joined local dignitaries and representatives from Royal British Legion in the unveiling of the centenary memorial stone to Field Marshal The Viscount Gort VC GCB CBE DSO and 2 Bars MVO MC on Cowes Parade.  Family members were also present including the Lord-Lieutenant of Kent, The Viscount De L’Isle, MBE.

Field Marshal John Standish Surtees Prendergast Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort, VC, GCB, CBE, DSO & Two Bars, MVO, MC (10 July 1886 to 31 March 1946) was a senior British Army officer. As a young officer during the First World War he was decorated with the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Battle of the Canal du Nord. During the 1930s he served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (the professional head of the British Army). He is most famous for commanding the British Expeditionary Force sent to France in the first year of the Second World War, which was evacuated from Dunkirk. Gort later served as Governor of Gibraltar and Malta, and High Commissioner for Palestine and Transjordan.

Memorial Service for Mary Ellis

On Monday 24th September 2018, the Lord-Lieutenant attended a memorial service for the Isle of Wight’s Mary Ellis, a Second World War pilot and trailblazer for women in the RAF, which was held at St Mary’s Church, Cowes.

Following the service, the Lord-Lieutenant along with guests, gathered at Northwood House to view an exhibition of Mary’s life and to watch a fly past of Spitfires from Boultbee Aviation at Goodwood  and Biggin Hill, London.

Mary, who died in July aged 101, always said the Spitfire was her favourite aircraft.
